Steph is joining us in West Bridgford

A few weeks ago we received an email from Mike Payne who is a member of
Transition Bingham and is a Transition Trainer, informing us that Steph Bradley who has walked up from Totnes and is visiting Transition Initiatives along the leafy lanes of England is coming to Nottingham via Leicester and Loughbrough, arriving 27th or 28th May depending how quickly her flip flops take her.

She was looking for somewhere to stay so after contacting members of the Skills Exchange 4 people came up trumps. Thea offered her the newly decorated spare room, invited some friends and visited other Transition members so that Steph could get a feel for what sort of things we are doing. At the end of day one she managed to fit in a hotstone treatment from one of the skills exchange members. She should now be refreshed and ready for the next leg of her walk around the country.

It was lovely to meet her and look forward to reading her Transition tales.

West Bridgford Summer Gathering 2010

This year the Summer Gathering was a great success with over 3000 visitors it has been the biggest gathering since its inception 4 years ago. The weather was perfect and both the visitors and stall holders seem to have had a great day.

Transition West Bridgford had a stall where Julie, Maureen, Anna and Diane manned The Greening Campaign the 'what next' display and used this opportunity to find out how the local residents wanted to proceed for the next phase of the Greening Campaign.

Members of the Skills Exchange came to help and promote Transition West Bridgford talking about the Eco House tour of the following day, The Skills Exchange and Transition in general. They did a fabulous job as the next day a few dozen people visited the local Eco Houses.

Thank you to all who helped out to make this day a success

West Bridgord Summer Gathering celebrating sustainable and community living

So many stall holders and members of the West Bridgford community pulled out the stops to make this day memorable, because of them over 3000 visitors enjoyed this celebration of sustainable and community living and had a chance to experience the warmth and passion our local stall holders and entertainers displayed during this lovely day.

Some fond memories of this year's Summer Gathering
Enjoy!

Good memories of the 2010 Summer Gathering

Although pictures can't capture accurately the warmth and happiness of this year's Summer Gathering, hopefully they will bring back fond memories of a wonderful day.

West Bridgford Skills Exchange get together

Today we combined the celebration of Green Streets West Bridgford with a get together of members of the Skills Exchange. Although it was the Bank Holiday saturday with lots of other pressures on people 50 friends turned up and did their bit to make it a lovely event.

Catherine came and sold her beautiful glass craft for a gem, Michelle was there with the Green Box shop, Flora with her funding ideas, Transition West Bridgford had a display showing all the initiatives currently active,
Martha made some lovely home made cards and paper gift bags out of newspapers and is inviting people to join her craft workshop. Thomas had some of his greeting cards on display. An amazing variety of cakes and biscuits; wheat and dairy free by Diane, a scrumptious German yeast cherry cake by Christa, some out of this world cakes by Sally T, freshly pressed apple juice from Trish and home made lemonade from Karina.
Mark from Taste supplied the delicious birthday cake and cupcakes so all in all a hive of activity where the group could mingle and net work. Lots of exchanges were set up so we can expect the Gems to shine in the weeks to come.

Thank you so much for all your contibutions to make this day a lovely event.

From the sounds of it the members enjoyed it too:

"Thanks for organising such a worthwhile event and for the photo! "Mark
" I fell privileged to be able to play a small part in the great work you are doing to protect our environment" Cllr Khan

Green Streets west bridgford first birthday

Cake made by Wendy of Taste on Clumber Road

Yesterday saw the 12th celebration of Green Streets Walk/ride days that we organised to make people aware and experience what it is like to leave the car behind and make a special effort to walk, cycle or use public transport.

This is one of the numerous Transition West Bridgford initiatives to get our town involved in making it more resilient and less dependent on oil. Over this last year hundreds of local people have made this special effort and I would like to take this opportunity to say Thank you to all.

When Cllr Khan a year ago launched the campaign on Melton Road in front of Celebrations, businesses like Celebrations, Taste, The Green Boxshop, Caffe Nero, Belle and Jerome, Inspiration, Flowerbay in Lady Bay, The Lady Bay pub and Signature really put all their enthusiasm and energy behind the event, gave discounts and incentives to all those who walked and cycled and wore something Green. Nicola Pearson and Paul Philipps from Rushcliffe BC, Lin Taylor of our Library and Chris from Pedal express worked tirelessly to promote the event, designed, printed and distributed posters and flyers and cycled for miles with a bill board to announce the forthcoming walk day.
Schools like, Jesse Gray, WB Junior School, Greythorne Primary School had assemblies, sold badges and raised awareness to both their pupils and the parents. For this I am extremely grateful as I know that time is precious and that these days even primary schools are working to an amazingly tight schedule not giving much lee way to do anything else than follow the curriculum.

We had Green Streets events on the Croquet Lawn and monthly guided bike rides organised by members of Pedals and members of Transition WB. A special Thank you to: Malcome and Margaret Kennerley, Brian and Kathy Shaw, Hugh McClintock, David Nicolson Cole, Kate Troy, Sheila Hood, employees of Games Workshop and Cllr Mallender for giving their time to show people in West Bridgford that it can be quick, easy and fun to cycle to various local destinations. The events on the Croquet lawn were hard work at times but made it all more rewarding to see that every single month, members from the West Bridgford Skills exchange, Jonathan and a local resident and a handful of local businesses came to help out and spread the message.

And then, there were the badges…. 12 different ones were printed for sale at 20 p in various locations but mainly through our local schools, where little champions were selling and promoting them. I would like to give a special mention to Natasha and her friends and Eleanor Collard who I know organised special events to sell the badges and promote the cause.. The idea behind the badges was that it would be an incentive to walk or cycle that day not realising that it had an even more diverse impact on the children.

Collecting these badges meant they had to be persistent and determined, they had to save their pocket money, they had to take care of them, treasure them and not loose them and that the reward of doing this would be that they would be entitled to go in the prize draw to win a bike.

Today is that big day, with the money received from all the 20p’s that you have paid to buy the badges, we have managed to buy a bike and helmet, The Green Streets birthday cake, the catering for this event and possibly 3 bike maintenance lessons in West Bridgford in the near future. If you are interested in these, please sign up and leave your details.

We have all contributed to this celebration in our own little ways and hope that you will continue to promote the last Friday in the month as a walk/ride day to your friends, colleagues and neighbours by handing out a badge to wear proudly on the day. The badges, some literature on cycling in WB and a window sticker are in the goodie bags that you will receive on your way out. Happy Walk/ Ride days and Thank you for making this year so rewarding for so many people.

The lucky winner of the bike was Cameron. Congratulations!
